Thomas "Tommy" Kinard is a firefighter who formerly worked at Station 118 of the Los Angeles Fire Department. He now works as a pilot at LAFD Air Operations.

History

Early Life

Tommy had a bad relationship with his father and compares him to Vincent Gerrard.

At an unknown time, he became a military pilot and a firefighter.

Station 118

Tommy is working at the 118 when Chimney joins. He is initially rude and dismissive of Chimney, suggesting Chimney might be a food courier when he first arrives and later rejecting Chimney's attempts to start a friendlier working relationship. However, after Chimney saves his life during a gas explosion, Tommy thanks and develops a newfound respect for him.

Tommy is still at the 118 when Hen arrives. He is cold to her at first but, as she proves herself in the field, eventually develops a respect for her and commends her for her abilities.

Dating Abby

One year prior to the series, he was engaged to 9-1-1 dispatcher, Abby Clark. They were together for two years until he broke it off with her, which devastated her. By the time of "Pilot", it had been a year since they broke up.

Moving to the 217

By the time Bobby joins the 118 as its new captain, Tommy has developed a friendly relationship with both Hen and Chimney. The three surprise Tommy with balloons and a cake when he later moves to Station 217.

Helping Chimney

In Broken, the 911 dispatch center suffered from a power outage. Chimney called the 118 to go to a neighborhood where there was a fire emergency that no one was paying attention to. When the ladder wasn't maintained broke while on the call and there was a lack of water in both the fire trucks and the fire hydrants, Chimney called Tommy for help. Tommy most likely flew a plane with a tankard of water and he had it water dropped to put out the fire.

Saving Bobby and Athena

When Hen notices that Bobby and Athena's cruise ship has disappeared from radar amid a hurricane, she goes to LAFD Air Operations in an attempt to use a helicopter to find them. In doing so, she reunites with Tommy, who covers for her. As it turns out, Chimney, accompanied by Buck and Eddie, had already reached out to Tommy about the situation. Tommy successfully pilots the helicopter into the hurricane, enabling the group to locate the cruise ship and begin the rescue.

Befriending Eddie

Following the cruise ship rescue, Tommy strikes up a notable friendship with Eddie based on their shared interests and military history.

Buck reaches out to Tommy for a tour of Air Operations; the tour is cut short by the arrival of Eddie, who promptly leaves with Tommy as they fly to a fight in Vegas via helicopter. This causes Buck to grow jealous to where he crashes a basketball game in which Eddie and Tommy are playing and purposefully knocks Eddie to the ground out of frustration from losing. Tommy takes Eddie to the hospital to treat the resulting sprain.

Kissing Buck

Tommy later shows up at Buck’s loft to clear the air. He explains that he doesn’t want to create bad blood between Buck and Eddie, but Buck waves this off and says that he himself is at fault due to his jealousy. Tommy reassures that Buck is irreplaceable in Eddie’s life before admitting that he too harbors jealousy after seeing how much of a family the 118 has become in his absence. To this, Buck confesses his admiration for Tommy and that the real reason he asked for the tour was to get to know him. The two share a flirtatious exchange that ends with Tommy kissing Buck and asking him out on a date, to which Buck accepts.

Awkward First Date

Tommy and Buck go to a restaurant for their first date, with plans to see a movie after. Buck is visibly tense as it is his first date with a man. He becomes increasingly nervous when Eddie and Marisol show up at the same restaurant, which causes him to flagrantly lie about the true nature of his dinner with Tommy. Tommy decides to skip the movie after this, reasoning that, while he finds Buck adorable, he doesn’t think he’s ready. He taxies away, leaving Buck on his own outside the restaurant.

Second Date

A few days later, Buck invites Tommy to coffee, where he apologizes for his behavior on the date. Tommy, however, says that Buck's behavior wasn't the problem; in reality, he didn't want to pressure Buck. Buck explains that, while he doesn’t know what he’s ready for, he is willing to try and pursue something with Tommy. He invites him to Maddie's wedding as his date, to which Tommy says yes.

Chimney and Maddie's Wedding

While on standby for work, Tommy attends Chimney’s bachelor party but eventually leaves with the rest of the 118 after he’s called to help with a fire.

The following day, Tommy goes straight from the fire to the hospital where Maddie and Chimney’s wedding takes place. Late for the ceremony and covered in soot, he meets Buck in the lobby and the two kiss. Buck then inadvertently comes out to his friends and family when he returns alongside Tommy with a soot-dirtied face. However, everyone is supportive of their status.

Medal Ceremony

The 118 and Tommy are gifted Medals of Valor for their roles in the cruise ship rescue. Afterward, Tommy and Chimney, alongside Buck, are met with their former captain, Gerrard, who shoots a snide comment at Tommy before bickering with Chimney.

Tommy later mentions Gerrard during a date with Buck at the latter's apartment, in which the two open up to each other about their fathers and father figures.

Six Month Anniversary

While on a date for their six month anniversary, with Buck had asked Tommy if he has ever dated any women in the past. Turns out he has and was almost engaged to none other than Abby Clark. Tommy said breaking up with her was one of the only honest things he has done while dating her and commented that she had "amazing" hair. He said she deserved better and had heard she went a little "nuts" and started dating a "himbo half her age", not knowing that was Buck.

Later Buck reveals to Tommy that he is the himbo who dated Abby.

Break up with Buck

Buck asks Tommy to move in, but is rejected. Tommy knows he wouldn't be Buck's soulmate and Buck is still figuring things out with his sexuality. This ultimately ends their relationship.

Potential Rekindle with Buck

When Buck takes Ravi out for drinks in an effort to make more friends, the latter goes to get beers and finds Tommy. In order to get out of drinking with Buck, Ravi reunites the exes and flees. The two of them catch up, where Tommy learns Eddie went back to Texas and he also reveals they haven't spoke since the breakup. Tommy tells Buck he thought about calling and has drove past the loft a couple times, but Buck had started subletting Eddie's house. The two go there and hook up and the next morning they discuss the possibility of giving their relationship another go. Tommy seemingly jokes about the "competition" has been eliminated, referring to Eddie and insinuates Buck has a crush on him. Buck gets defensive and snaps at Tommy, who then leaves.

Helicopter Pursuit

In Lab Rats, despite Tommy's complicated relationship with Buck but with his loyalty, love, and care to 118, Tommy heard on the radio what had happened and he was called by Buck to help him and Athena save the 118 when the 118 responded to an emergency in a bio lab. Realizing the army and the F.B.I. didn't have a care about human lives even with the antiviral, Tommy most likely secretly dropped Athena off in the dark where she got a ride from Karen who worked with microbiologists, Roz and Allen to save the 118. He, an incarcerated Moira, and Buck acted as a distraction to draw the army and the F.B.I. away from the bio lab for the antiviral to be administered to Chimney. They succeed but sadly Bobby died due to the virus spread because his oxygen tank's tube got damaged in the lab explosion and Bobby's choice to save his team, much to the 118's grief.

Prior to the show, Tommy and Abby were engaged for two years until Tommy called it off. He heard she went a little "nuts" afterwards and dated a "himbo" half her age. Tommy said Abby deserved better after what he put her through. He noted that she has "amazing" hair.

Trivia

• During Season 2, although his name tag read Kincaid, every official press release Tommy appeared in listed his surname as Kinard. This was most likely an error by the production team — Bobby even addresses Tommy as "Kinard" on one occasion.
  • This mistake is corrected when Tommy reappears in "Capsized", with his name tag now reading Kinard instead of Kincaid.
• Tommy's likes the movie Love, Actually. He also loves monster trucks
• He likes craft beer.
• Tommy has a scar on the right side of his torso, caused by a piece of shrapnel from a factory explosion.
• Chimney calls Tommy to ask him for help with a neighborhood gas leak in "Broken".
  • Chimney later references this in "The One That Got Away" where he states that he hasn’t been in contact with Tommy since his departure from the 118, outside of the call mentioned above.
• Tommy shares Christopher's Star Wars opinion that Revenge of the Sith is a better movie than Return of the Jedi.
• Tommy was not open about his sexuality when he worked at the 118, citing the regressive environment under Gerrard's captaincy, and only came out after he left the station.
• Tommy doesn't speak to his father, who he compares to Gerrard in terms of paternal influence.
