Synopsis[]

While in Florida caring for her ailing father, Athena and Bobby investigate the disappearance of her childhood friend from 45 years ago.[1]

Full Synopsis[]

The police show up since Joanne had called them earlier, due to Athena and Bobby trespassing. Joanne tells the police she wasn't going to press charges, but they bring in Athena for interfering with an active investigation. Surprised, Athena simply complies and is taken away.

Joanne apologizes to Bobby, but he assures that Athena can handle herself because she is a cop. Joanne notes that would explain her tough attitude before Bobby tells her that Athena will likely tell Dixon about what Joanne told them. As he starts to leave, Joanne tells him after the party a car happened to appear but while she didn't see it, the car made a distinctive sound that stuck with her.

At the police station, Athena and Detective Dixon share information, with the evidence starting to point towards Reggie Franklin, who previously told Athena there anyone could have placed Tanya under the cement before realizing he may be involved.

At the hospital, Reggie Franklin is giving the Carters food and support.

While driving to the precinct, Bobby notices the Franklin truck at the orange grove and recalls the sound it made and realizes it matches Joanne's description of the car she heard at the party. At that moment, Athena calls Bobby and tells him it is looking like Franklin did it. Bobby tells her that he spoke with Joanne and her description was the Franklin truck. Bobby decides that he needs to warn Joanne of the threat.

After the call, Athena wonders how Reggie could’ve found Tanya before realizing that Junior is the real culprit because he was at the same party. Surely enough, Junior has broken into the Kingston house and stole Joanne's gun. Holding her at gunpoint, he tells the shocked Joanne that he came to tie up loose ends and proceeds to abduct her.

Junior takes a bound Joanne to the orange grove, where he goes over the night Tanya disappeared. It is revealed in a flashback that Tanya started to leave the party, as per her agreement with her sister and Junior caught up to her to give her a ride home because it was late at night. They had a good talk, but Tanya ran away from him after he made sexual advances on her and threatened to inform her sister. Not wanting to be exposed, he pursued her through the orange groves and was able to catch her before dragging the girl off, with her hair barrette falling off, revealing he killed her.

In the present, he voices his intentions to frame Joanne for the crime and make it seem that she committed suicide out of guilt. She pleads to him by bringing up their past friendship but is coldly ignored. Just as he is about to shoot Joanne, Bobby appears and tackles him. While they struggle, Joanne grabs the gun and pulls the trigger, but the shot doesn't hit though notifies Athena and Detective Dixon who arrived on the scene. Junior quickly throws Bobby off him and flees while Athena tends to her husband though he declares he is fine and tells her to get Junior. Athena chases her former friend through the orange grove. She eventually catches up to him and clocks him in the head with a shovel, she notes he has been hiding in plain sight, but she firmly states she finally got him after 45 years for Tanya's death. Athena then cuffs Junior and hands him over to Dixon. Bobby catches up and asks his wife if she's okay, to which she answers that she is now while watching Dixon haul Junior away.

At the precinct, Reggie Sr. is brought in for questioning, with Athena and Dixon noting that he likely knows everything that transpired. Dixon wonders if he will tell them, as Athena notes that depends on how they asked. She goes to question him, as he questioned on where the detective is. Athena tells him she came in because she knew he could not lie to her and he is revealed to have covered up for his son after the latter guilted him into helping and he buried Tanya's body under the room he was building at the time for the Carters, stating he had to protect his boy. However, Dixon brings out a box, with Athena telling Reggie what his actions of helping his son led to. Dixon takes out six pairs of shoes, obtained from Junior's shop and reveals he was a predator who had killed at least six more girls over the years, much to Reggie's horror. Seeing this, a sullen Reggie says that Junior told him that Tanya was an accident and all he wanted was to protect his boy, but Dixon coldly states he never considered his other victims from his choice.

The next morning, Athena and Joanne talk about the event, as Joanne is horrified to hear that there are more victims and Athena says the cops aren't done looking. Joanne brings up how it was odd Junior came to the house the day after her sister vanished, now realizing he did so to flush out what she knew. Athena asks Joanne what she intends to do now, and she is unsure because she waited so long but voices how a fresh start might be good. She states she felt like everyone forgot about her sister after the first few months, but Athena said she never stopped thinking of her sister who had an impact on her life. Joanne thanks her for getting her family justice after so long.

Athena goes to the hospital, where she questions why Bobby wanted her to get there urgently and he informs her that her father is awake. Athena tells her father that she solved the case and Samuel tells her Athena that he was proud of her for never giving up on the Tanya Kingston case.
