Season Five

Season Five is the fifth season of 9-1-1. It was first announced on May 17, 2021.^[1]

The season premiered on September 20, 2021 with "Panic" and concluded on May 16, 2022 with "Starting Over".

Production of Season 5 began on July 12, 2021, and concluded on April 5, 2022.

Synopsis[]

As the fifth season of 9-1-1 opens, the first responders race into action when a series of ransomware attacks target computer systems, air traffic control towers and hospitals. Then, a massive city-wide blackout causes havoc in L.A. Meanwhile, Athena deals with a family emergency, Maddie’s postpartum depression worsens, Eddie suffers a health scare, and a new call center operator takes charge.

Confirmed Storylines[]

The crisis to strike LA at the beginning of the season will be a blackout, revealed by its first teaser trailer on July 19, 2021.
- The blackout emergency will span the first three episodes of the season.^[2]
Another crossover with its spinoff series has been confirmed to happen sometime in 2022.^[3]
The exploration of Maddie's struggle with postpartum depression, and it leading to major complications.^[4]
Albert Han's journey into becoming a firefighter.^[5]
Athena will be dealing with her attacker, the serial rapist she caught and arrested at the end of Season 3.^[6]

Trivia[]

Below are the changes made to the main cast this season:
- John Harlan Kim (Albert Han) has been removed from the "starring" credits and is instead credited as a recurring guest star for his appearances in this season.
- Following his character's departure in "Defend in Place", Rockmond Dunbar (Michael Grant) has been removed from the "starring" credits, although he is credited for the last time in the following episode.^[7]
"Outside Looking In" is the last episode to feature Marcanthonee Jon Reis (Harry Grant), although he is credited up until "Let the Games Begin".
Gavin McHugh announced they had started filming for Season Five, via his Instagram, on July 22.
The first official promotional video for the season was posted on July 20th, but it was later taken down due to licensing of “Paint It Black” by the Rolling Stones being used in the promo expiring.^[8] A different promotional video was posted later on August 10th.
On July 28, filming for parts of Episode 1 and 2 of Season 5 took place on a stretch of Hollywood Boulevard and at Hollywood & Highland shopping center.^[9]^[10]
Maddie is absent for several episodes, due to Jennifer Love Hewitt's maternity leave.^[11]
The resumption of production after the holiday break was pushed back a week to January 10, 2022, due to the surge of COVID-19 cases in California, where the show is filmed.^[12]
On February 2, 2022, it was announced that Arielle Kebbel had been cast in a recurring role for the second half of the fifth season. ^[13]
On February 19, 2022, it was announced that Bryce Durfee was cast for a recurring role.^[14]
