Sam Campbell is a character on 9-1-1: Lone Star and a Texas Ranger who is partnered with Carlos Reyes. He is portrayed by Parker Young.
History[]
Not much is known of his early life, other that he was previously in the military but nothing regarding his service there is known. He has been married to his wife Ashlyn for over a decade. Their union has produced four children, all of whom he is over the moon about and willing to do anything for. He mentions that he and his wife have an understanding, as he gives her flowers or chocolates for special occasions because of her knowing his work is to keep the public safe. He remarked the only thing that matters to her is that he comes back home.
Sam then joined the Texas Rangers where he was mentored by chief Bridges and worked with fellow Ranger Gabriel Reyes, for over seven years. In his opinion, he described Gabriel as being an insufferable pain yet also saw him as methodical and dedicated in his work, showing some respect.
Working with another Reyes[]
A year later after the murder of Gabriel, Campbell found himself working with the latter's son Carlos Reyes who has joined the Texas Rangers like his father and started to investigate a string of armored truck robberies. Feeling Carlos only got the job through nepotism, Campbell and Carlos constantly butt heads but are forced to cooperate over the case after their superior forces them to team up. Although annoyed with this arrangement, Campbell and Carlos finally reached common ground after discovering the M.O of the perps and how it was connected to someone in the military, both set up a successful sting that ended the robberies. Afterwards, he and Carlos apologize to each other before deciding to work better in the future with Campbell calling him partner.[1]
The rangers investigate a case, where several women suffered from overdoses after being drug mules. Campbell and Carlos personally swore to the sister of one of the mules, they'd get her sister justice. The two looked into the sister's activities, before some quick thinking from Carlos allowed them to discover the location of a person on the sister's phone contacts. It leads the rangers to a massage parlor and the uncovering of a drug operation, with Campbell telling the masseuse that he was looking forward to the court date after she previously threatened them with legal repercussion. Afterwards, Campbell learns that Carlos is antsy about his first anniversary with his husband and gives him advice.[2]
While investigating a gang killing, it leads the rangers to new information on Gabriel's murder. During the case, Campbell is shot in the arm but quickly kills his shooter before he is found by Carlos. While being treated by Nancy Gillian, he meets Carlos' husband TK Strand but is confused by Carlos not introducing them or their awkward stance. After finding and rescuing a captive man who was Gabriel's CI, Campbell asks Carlos about the situation and learns that he and TK are on the fence of adopting the latter's brother because of Carlos' stance against parenthood. Campbell remarks on this, but relates that fatherhood was a natural thing to him. Afterwards Nestor Grimes, the captive man awakes, and Carlos speaks with him before he dies. Soon Campbell and Bridges inquire if the man said anything, but Carlos claims he didn't reveal anything. Unknown to him, Nestor used his dying breath to reveal to Carlos that Gabriel warned him of Campbell, meaning he is supposedly connected to the murder of Carlos' father and responsible for the deaths of other rangers.[3]
After packing up to go home, he bumped into Carlos and ask him if he wanted to join him in getting breakfast but got turned down. Carlos later reports to Bridges that he believes Campbell was the dirty Ranger the Grimes told him about. Bridges had a hard time believing that but after seeing the logins used to see who were the confidential informants and that many were killed. The belief was seemingly solidified when Campbell took a personal day off, most likely as a cover. When the Rangers visited his home, he was celebrating his son's birthday and was confronted on the matter. However, Campbell realized he was set up as he had reported it to Gabriel and was able to escape. Going on the run, he gathered supplies though ended up injured in a one sided brawl and was positively identified. His wife was devastated but she ended up arrested for aiding a fugitive after she refused to give him up. Campbell tried to prepare the necessary things for escape in hopes to find out who was corrupt, his plan was found out by Bridges. The rallied Rangers and cops pursue Campbell to the border, where a shoot-off occurred. Bridges got a strike to the hand, while Carlos continued to return fire until Campbell stopped shooting. Bridges tried to get Carlos to take the shot at Campbell but Carlos refused as this was unprecedented of a traitor and he noticed that Bridges did not want to take Campbell alive. However, Carlos noted it would be the right time to just arrest him though Bridges called him too dangerous until Carlos realized that Bridges carry the same side arm that killed his father and not only would Campbell have access to the databank but Bridges would too. At that point, Bridges shoots Carlos in the side and revealed he is the mole that killed Gabriel not Campbell, who was his scapegoat. Bridges planned to kill Carlos and frame Campbell to cover his tracks. However, Campbell proceeded to save Carlos by shooting Bridges in the head until collapsing from his wounds. He was taken to the hospital, where he was visited by Carlos who was also recovering and tells him that he was exonerated after evidence confirmed Bridges was dirty though he is sure the board plans to keep it under wraps, just that he died in line of duty. Carlos apologized for accusing him, but Campbell held no ill will because they were misled and reveals that he suspected Bridges was the culprit after they showed up and he deduced that Bridges set him up. He also reveals that he was shooting only at Bridges not him. Carlos told him he has no idea of how Bridges' death will be seen by the public or how the board reacted to his corrupt nature. He is then visited by his family who overjoyed by his innocence but his wife is still understandably hostile towards Carlos.[4]
