Robert Strand was a character on FOX's 9-1-1: Lone Star. He is the half-brother of Owen Strand. He debuted in the sixteenth episode of the third season and is portrayed by guest star Chad Lowe.

History[]

Early Life[]

Robert was born and raised in California to Walter and Helen Strand. He was the third child of his father, who was previously married to another woman but divorced after his youngest son died in a tragic accident. Growing up, he was very close to his father who did everything he could to be a good parent to him, by being a baseball coach or just spending time together.

Meeting with his brother[]

When Walter's health started to deteriorate, he was hospitalized in a nursing home. Robert and his family all gathered at the home awaiting the news. Soon Robert finds a man sitting in the waiting room, they strike up a conversation from television ads to discussing their fathers. Robert states his was an ideal father while Owen says his dad was an empty chair. A nurse interrupts them by saying that Walter is awake, and Robert tells Owen that he should say what he has to say to his own father. Much later, Owen returns and enters Walter's room and talks with Helen, who tries to dissuade him from talking to his ailing father, but Robert appears on the scene. He firmly tells his mother to let Owen talk with his father, stating they both need this, revealing he knew Owen's identity from their talk. After Walter and Owen reconcile, Robert spots his brother leaving and asks how the talk went. Owen tells him the words found him and Robert is pleased things went well. The two give their names and Robert tells him not to be a stranger, something Owen agrees too and heads out. [1]

Huntington's Diagnosis[]

It is revealed that he and Owen kept in contact. Robert decides to visit Austin after the recent death of their father. He meets his nephew TK Strand, who is excited to have more family and his fiancé Carlos Reyes. Robert and TK talk about Robert's family, with him pleasantly telling TK that he is part of that family now before giving him his grandfather's journal. When going through pictures, Robert seems to be momentarily confused, something that Owen notices and seem to become aware that is something is off about Robert when his hand starts to shake, and his memory seems groggy. Owen later confronts Robert who assures him that his visit was to connect and not bring about bad tidings because he wants to connect with family and go to his nephew's wedding. After more pressing, he soon reveals he has Huntington's Disease and gradually over time it worsens and it's a hereditary condition, as their father's side had it and the latter died before the final stages. This left Owen worried because of Robert implying that both Owen and TK can be at risk of carrying the disease, due to being direct relatives of Walter. [2]

Owen takes Robert to the hospital for his injury and they talk about his diagnosis. He reveals that he hasn't told his children, only his wife knows. Owen relates to this by informing him of his own experience with lung cancer and how he overcame it. Robert is impressed with his brother's story but bitterly notes he is fighting losing battle. Later, Owen tells TK of Robert's condition and how they are at risk of the gene for Huntington's disease, surprising him. Later, Owen drives Robert back to California and they arrive at the beach, where Robert's family are gathered. While watching the family, Owen receives a mail from the clinic and calls TK to tell him the news: he tested negative to the gene which means neither he nor TK have it. Once he hangs up, Robert tells him he's happy for him and tells Owen that he and his family will come back to Texas for the wedding but that after that Robert will stay in Austin in the hope of Owen helping him die by assisted suicide.
