Michael Grant is a former main character on 9-1-1 who is the ex-husband of Athena Grant and the father of May and Harry Grant. He debuts in the first episode of the first season of 9-1-1 and is portrayed by Rockmond Dunbar.
History[]
Background[]
He married Athena, and they went on to have two kids, though unknown to the family he was secretly gay and hid this from the family.
Coming Out to His Family[]
Michael came out as gay to Athena fourteen years into their marriage and then to his children. They went to couples therapy together to try to maintain their marriage for the sake of their children at first and Athena went in there with the hopes that the two could stay married as they both still love each other even though that meant that they would have to live without sex. Michael however, didn't feel the same as he has met another guy. Athena eventually realized that they would have to divorce, or she would become too resentful and hateful towards him. The two later divorced and remain close friends afterward, while Michael is still close to their children.
He dated a man named Glenn who attends one of their family dinners in "Stuck". He mentions to Bobby in "Broken" that they have broken up.
Brain Tumor[]
Michael was diagnosed with a brain tumor after having symptoms, and he told Bobby about it first.[3] He kept his diagnosis a secret from Athena and the kids for a while but later revealed it to them and said he decided not to have surgery on it, as he felt it was too risky.[1] By the events of "Pinned," Michael informed Bobby that he doesn't think he will live much longer. He told Bobby that he has gotten to see May grow up but worried he will not get to see Harry grow up as well. Bobby promised him he will continue on his legacy with Harry if that were to happen.
He received chemotherapy and radiation therapy for his tumor and in "What's Next?", he got the news that his tumor has shrunk by 30% and will no longer be a problem for him.
Engagement to David and Going to Haiti[]
Michael met David Hale while trapped in an elevator after the power went out. They talked and flirted, but their interaction was cut short when Michael received a call from Bobby that Athena is in the hospital.[4] He ran into David again after he received good news about his tumor and the two finally went to dinner together.[5]
After some time, they moved in together and Michael decided to propose to David after David revealed that he will be going to Haiti for a while to help with relief efforts. However, his proposal plan was interrupted when an explosion occurred at the hospital David works at. David was stuck in an OR performing surgery during the emergency, and after he got out of the hospital safely, David said yes to Michael and they got engaged.
Later on during dinner with the whole family, Michael announced to everyone that he has decided to go with David to Haiti to help rebuild lives.[6]
In "Ashes, Ashes", Michael is revealed to have moved to Florida and now married to David.

Michael and Athena were married for fourteen years before Michael came out to Athena as gay. She was shocked and felt angry and betrayed by Michael. The couple went to therapy and attempted to maintain their marriage for the sake of their children, but Athena eventually realized that they would have to divorce, or she would become too resentful and hateful towards him.
Following their divorce, Michael and Athena remain close friends. They are able to co-parent well and still have conversations regarding the children or their activities. Athena once humiliated a pair of dirty cops for threatening Michael and the kids. When their son was kidnapped, Michael was fully aware that Athena would not stand by and correctly guess she had a plan. Despite their closeness, he was shocked to learn that Athena was previously engaged to another man and complained on how she hid this fact from him. However, Bobby pointed he had hid things from her, so he couldn't be too upset.
