"Malfunction" is the eighth episode of the third season of 9-1-1, and the thirty-sixth episode overall. It aired on November 11, 2019.

Synopsis[]

Emergencies include a skating mishap at an ice show, an accident involving a self-driving car and a fulfillment warehouse robot going rogue. Meanwhile, Eddie's after-hours fight club gets out-of-control and Hen struggles in her relationship with Karen.

  • This is the last episode that the character Lena Bosko is featured in.
  • It's mentioned that the 136 captain, Ronnie Cooper recognized Eddie from the Tsunami. However during the scene when Ronnie arrived at hospital Eddie wasn't wearing anything with the 118's identification on him.

Continuity[]

  • Athena was suspended temporarily for her drastic actions taken while solving the case of Emmett's murder in "Athena Begins".
  • Maddie is also still suspended from work and mentions she is back in therapy which had been recommended to her in "Monsters".
  • Eddie mentions the death of his wife Shannon Diaz, which occurred in "Careful What You Wish For".

Cultural References[]

  • Bobby mentioned that a simple wardrobe malfunction such as the sequin falling in the ice skating incident can make the skate stop. A similar incident happened on the British television series, Dancing on Ice, though with no casualties.[2]

  • Eddie's activities at the fight ring are exposed to Bobby after he puts his opponent in the hospital.
  • Hen tells Athena about her rocky homelife with Karen Wilson since their failed attempts at IVF.
  • While transporting Jerome (the warehouse employee injured by a haywire robot he sabotaged) to hospital, a presumed traffic light malfunction causes Hen's ambulance to broadside Evelyn's car, killing Evelyn.
