Madney is the romantic relationship from 9-1-1 between Howard Han and Maddie Buckley.
History[]
Meeting[]
Maddie and Chimney met in Season 2 Episode 6 when Buck recruited both Chimney and Eddie to help Maddie move into her new apartment. When Maddie confessed that she hasn’t seen Mission Impossible, later in the episode, Chimney returns to her apartment with a gift wrapped DVD and she asks him if he’d like to stay and watch a movie with her.
Relationship Growing[]
The relationship is initially complicated by the fact Maddie has just left an abusive relationship. They remain firmly as friends until Season 2 Episode 8 when Chimney tells her that his “calendar is wide open” for her, if she’s ever ready. In Season 2 Episode 11 Maddie asks him out on a date whilst also telling him that she has filed for divorce. Unfortunately, her husband (Doug Kendall) finds her before the first date can ever happen - he stabs Chimney and kidnaps Maddie. Both of them survive and share their first kiss at the end of Season 2 Episode 13.
Getting Together[]
Maddie and Chimney, after a short time apart in Season 2 following the aftermath of Doug finding her, got together in Episode 18. Maddie comes to the firehouse where she tells Chimney that maybe they could have something different, he kisses her and they are next shown back at the firehouse celebrating as a couple.
Established Relationship[]
After Maddie's ex manipulates his way back into her life, he stabs Chimney and abducts Maddie. Chimney uses his strength to tell Buck of his situation while Doug reveals to Maddie that Chimney likely died of his wounds, depressing her. After Maddie ends Doug's abuse permanently, she is rescued and informed by her brother of Chimney's survival and she is relieved, going to the same hospital that he's at to see him.
Following on from the trauma, they both agree to take some time to heal for themselves in Season 2 Episode 14 before deciding to try again in the season finale. Season 3 opens with them in a good place, they briefly mention not knowing whether they want kids or not, filing it for a later discussion. In Season 3 Episode 13, Chimney tells Maddie that he loves her, she responds that she feels the same but she can’t say those words out loud in the aftermath of her previous relationship. In Season 3 Episode 18, it is revealed that Maddie is pregnant with their first child.
Season 4 opens up in the midst of the pandemic, Maddie has moved into Chimney’s apartment but he has moved out to protect her and the baby. He moves back in before the end of Episode 2 and in Season 4 Episode 3, they find out they are having a baby girl. Their relationship has gotten strong enough for her to inform him of her family trauma and pleading to him not to tell Buck about it.
Jee-Yun Buckley Han is born in Season 4 Episode 9 and the Season ends with Maddie asking for help when she is struggling with Postpartum Depression.
Break Up[]
Due to Jennifer Love Hewitt’s maternity leave, Maddie is seen leaving at the beginning of Season 5 having not found the right help for her PPD despite numerous medications and doctors appointments. Chimney follows her with their daughter and Season 5 Episode 12 concludes that search in Boston where Maddie has been for six months. Chimney brings her back to LA in the next episode where it is revealed that they have made the decision to break up and focus on co-parenting.
Getting Back Together[]
Season 6 Episode 1 shows Chimney asking Maddie to temporarily move back in with him and Jee-Yun following a leak in Maddie’s apartment. They end up having a one night stand before the episode ends with Maddie telling Chimney that she’s done running and she wants to be a family again. He wants the same, and so they decide to try again. She moves back into their apartment officially.
Relationship Strengthening[]
Since Season 6 Episode 1, Maddie and Chimney’s relationship has been shown to be stable and strong in spite of everything they have been through. They decide to start house hunting before Chimney finds himself falling in love with the “murder house” that he later discovers is not what it seems when he shows Maddie around. They make the decision to buy that house together in Season 6 Episode 9 and Season 6 Episode 10 opens up a few months down the line with the house almost completely refurbished and the three of them having moved in.
