Father Brian is a guest character on 9-1-1. Bobby regularly visited his church for confession, to discuss the death of his family and his role in it. Later, Father Brian also provides confession for Eddie and Buck.
History[]
Helping Bobby[]
When Bobby moved to LA from Minnesota after he had caused a fire that killed 145 people including his family members, Father Brian lend Bobby a listening ear. Brian was new to the church and was a bit nervous.[1] He compared Bobby to Saint Paul. Father Brian had Bobby open up to his team truthfully and he gave him advice when things became troubling to him. Father Brian was against Bobby committing suicide when he is able to save 148 people to balance the 148 people who were killed in the Minnesota fire and he tried to encourage him to continue working to see God's bigger plans in the end.
Helping Eddie[]
After speaking with Bobby, Eddie decides to attend confession with Father Brian, despite his last confession being 23 years ago. He describes the broad strokes of his emotional affair with Kim and expresses guilt for traumatizing Chris and causing him to leave. Father Brian tells him that God can give him forgiveness and Eddie, deciding he is not worthy of forgiveness, leaves abruptly. Father Brian later spots Eddie at a juice bar, and notices him changing his mind from juice to water. He sits down to talk with Eddie, who initally does not recognize Father Brian and think he's hitting on him. Father Brian tells Eddie he believes he chose the water because Eddie doesn't think he's worthy of joy. He lists things Eddie has to be grateful for, and comments that Eddie's mustache, while handsome, seems to be a disguise. Eddie states he feels like a failure, and Father Brian insists he needs to take care of himself instead of punishing himself, and tasks him with doing something frivolous and joyful, just for himself.[2]
Helping Buck[]
A few weeks after Bobby's death, Buck visits the confessional. He admits that he's not Catholic and not there to confess, but instead hoping that Father Brian can send a message to Bobby. Father Brian tells him to talk to Bobby directly, and leaves the confessional. Buck tells Bobby that he isn't doing well, that the team doesn't need him, and asks for a sign. An earthquake then shakes the confessional. Father Brian pops back in, noting the earthquake, and the scene ends. [3]
