Det. Amber Braeburn was a missing persons detective for the Los Angeles Police Department, secretly moonlighting as a serial killer. She appeared in two episodes of the eighth season of 9-1-1 and is portrayed by Abigail Spencer.
History[]
In "Sob Stories", Detective Amber Braeburn was introduced to Sergeant Athena Grant-Nash and Maddie Han after Maddie's call with the kidnapper. Athena describes Amber as a "bloodhound" and that she has a good reputation in the LAPD, having found more missing kids than anyone in the force in the past fifteen years. Amber credits Maddie for her professionalism and her empathy whilst on the phone with the kidnapper, much to Maddie's disagreement. However, at the end of the episode, she is revealed to be a dirty cop using her occupation as a cover for her crimes. She later snuck into Maddie's house and struck her with a crowbar. A masked Amber tells the downed Maddie that she did not want to do this, but Maddie has forced her hand. Once the groggy Maddie is able to get a clear look at her, Amber revealed herself. She tells the surprised Maddie that she is fully prepared for her to be upset with her before she knocked her out with chloroform and kidnaps her.
It is revealed in "Voices" that Braeburn was a kidnapping victim herself when she was 14 and ran away from home. She called 9-1-1 herself after escaping from her captor on June 16, 2000. She is shown to have been traumatized by the experience and seems to be suffering from dissociative identity disorder, with some alternating between rage and remorse regarding the kidnappings. Amber reveals she abducted Maddie because her handle of the recent abduction got to her. She admits that she was after that kidnapper from the case and abducted him to serve as her patsy. She soon revealed that his supposed suicide was actually by her hands and justify his death as a service. Amber then left Maddie to continue her job as a cop, when she met Maddie's husband Chimney and learned of Maddie's pregnancy. Maddie then attempts to escape but Amber slashes her throat before going up to kill Chimney. However, Athena warns him, and Amber is knocked out by Maddie, who is clinging onto life. Amber tries one more time to kill Chimney before being shot in the head by Athena. Maddie was then taken to the hospital, where she was treated and was able to recover from her injuries.
Post-Mortem[]
In "Holy Mother of God", it was shown that in spite of her death that her actions still have a grip on Maddie. Despite having been previously abducted by her abusive ex, Maddie is still scared of Amber and can't be alone.
In "Disconnected", it is shown that Maddie has had frequent nightmares following her abduction. When Maddie attempts to return to work, she temporarily loses her ability to speak as a result of the trauma of the abduction, but eventually recovers and is able to return to work later.
Trivia[]
- She lived at 6374 Worley Road, which is a real place in St. Albans.
